The University of South Carolina will commemorate the life and legacy of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with three special events in January. This will mark
the 28th consecutive year that the university has held a formal program
to pay tribute to the late civil rights leader.

The University's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 14 at The Zone at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The main speaker for the breakfast will be the Steve Benjamin, newly elected Mayor of the City of Columbia. The breakfast will take place at 7:30 a.m. at The Zone at Williams-Brice Stadium. Tickets are on sale now for $8 at Carolina Coliseum box office.
Other speakers will include Bobby Gist, executive assistant to the president for equal opportunity programs; university Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Dennis Pruitt; Ebbie Yazdani, student-government president; Dr. Carl Wells, director of access and equity/diversity training.
Pruitt and Carl Wells, director of access and equity/diversity training, will present the annual Social Justice Awards to a faculty member, staff member, and student. The awards recognize individuals who have exemplified the philosophies of King through random or on-going acts of community service, social justice, or racial reconciliation.

The symposium will featuring, Retired Chief Justice Ernest A. Finney, Jr., Solicitor Ernest A. "Chip" Finney III, and Attorney Jerry Leo Finney, Sr. These panelists will discuss the legacy of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement and its impact on current social, political and legal issues facing South Carolina and the nation.
The symposium, which is sponsored by the Black Law Students Association, will be held at the Law School Auditorium and will be moderated by Judi Gatson of WIS-TV. A reception will be held immediately following the program.
14th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
The 14th-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 17, 2011. Every January, hundreds of University students take part in service projects around the Columbia community.
Sponsored by the Carolina Service Council and Community Service Programs, the event gives volunteers the chance to work with nonprofit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Home Works of America, and Reliant Hospice.
