GEOL 201 OBSERVING THE EARTH. (4) An introduction to study of the earth through observation of ancient and modern earth systems in a field setting. Field trips required.

ENGL 566M-001 TOPICS: CHILDRENS BOOKS TO CHILDRENS FILMS. (3) After a brief discussion of illustrated adaptations of early texts for children, the major focus will be current cinematic versions of books for children and young adults.
ENGL 566M-002 TOPICS: BLACKS AND JEWS IN AMERICAN CINEMA. (3) This course will explore the roles and situations of arguably the two most important minorities in the making of the American cinema.
ENGL 566M-003 HOLLYWOOD FILMS OF THE 30S AND 40S. (3) Study of select comedies and melodramas from the first two decades of the sound era. Considerable attention will be devoted to their preoccupation with relations between the sexes.
ENGL 566M-004 NARRATIVE, GENDER, SEX, AND FILM. (3) Examine how certain films interrogate or examine construction of gender and sexuality, and specifically etiological and teleological narratives of gender and sexual identity.
B. Southern Studies Program
SOST 410M BACKYARD BATTLES. (3) Students in this course will take. Students in this course will take advantage of the rich martial heritage that surrounds the USC campus. They will visit Revolutionary War battlefields and follow in the footsteps of General Shermans army. By taking a local, interdisciplinary approach, they will examine larger questions about the role of the armed forces in shaping regional identity. In the process, they will develop a heightened sense of "place" that will help them to appreciate better their personal history and culture.
SOST 411M TOPICS IN SOUTHERN FILM. (3) An introduction to films about the American South from the silent era to the present moment with an emphasis on the interaction of history, cultures, and the changing portrayal of lie in the South.
SOS 412 HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA. (3) This course is and examination of the history of the University of South Carolina from its beginnings until the present day. It will trace the institutions evolution from a small college to a modern research university. By examining USCs development in the context of state, regional, and national developments in higher education, students will gain an appreciation of the institution and its important place in the South Carolina community.
