At the request of the victims' families, who have expressed a need for privacy, the University of South Carolina did not release the victims' names until North Carolina officials confirmed their identities. Privacy concerns also prevent the university from displaying photographs of the students.

Resources for students

People grieve in different ways. Anyone who feels in distress or wants to talk with a counselor is encouraged to take advantage of all or some of the resources listed below.

The Counseling and Human Development Center can assist students experiencing grief and stress. The center offers individual and group counseling, workshops and self-help resources. For more information or to talk with a counselor, call 803-777-5223.

Student Health Services provides a guide to additional resources and offers tips on managing stress at its online site.

Rutledge Chapel on the Horseshoe is open for reflection and prayer from 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Representing more than a dozen faiths, the registered religious workers of the Carolina Campus Ministries can provide support and spiritual counseling to students. A directory of organizations is online, or students may call 803-777-6688.
