Co-Curricular Involvement & Transcripts

On September 14, 2005, Pam Person from the University of Cincinnati e-mailed the list asking for a definition of the term “co-curricular” as it pertains to enhancing college student learning. Although an answer was not expressly given, Michele Kane recommended “Learning Reconsidered” as a resource, and this question sparked a discussion of the use of co-curricular transcripts and where they are stored (with the Registrar or elsewhere). Several list members provided the web address for information on their institution’s co-curricular transcript or provided a description themselves. Concerns about verifying membership and participation in co-curricular activities were also voiced.

Original Message: definition of co-curricular

Could someone point me to a widely accepted definition of the term, co-curricular, especially as it relates to enhancing college student learning? Thanks!

Re: definition of co-curricular

If you haven't read "Learning Reconsidered", I highly recommend it. We use this document to clarify the work that we do when speaking with both other student life departments and academic affairs. It doesn't delineate classroom learning as different from the outside the classroom learning. Here's a quote: " 'Learning Reconsidered' defines learning as a comprehensive, holistic, transformative activity that integrates academic learning and student development, processes that have often been considered separate, and even independent of each other."

You can get the document, it's only 35 pages, through NASPA or ACPA. We purchased a bunch of copies and try to give it to anyone outside of our division who says "I didn't know Residence Life did that."

Original Message: co-curricular transcript

I'm curious how many of you out there offer the (below mentioned) co-curricular transcript. I like the idea. If you do have this program, I would very much like to get more information.

Re: co-curricular transcript

Jeannine, et al.,

You are welcome to visit our Website (http://www.stockton.edu/ultra/) to view our ULTRA program. I am hoping to have all new students take advantage of this option. We have received good feedback re: its utility. It has been in existence for quite a few years.

Re: co-curricular transcript

At our college, students explore majors in their FYE class. All students take the Discover program. This is done in a lab and done by the Coordinator of Career Exploration. After they complete it online and print their reports, he reviews how to read the data and its implications for choosing a major. Then the students have a Career Project that they do, using this Discover information and Occupational Handbooks. By the time they complete it, they are generally sure they want to stay in their major or explore looking at other avenues. Having the Career Exploration office do the Discover also gives the students an opportunity to make connection with that person. Students often make appointments to meet with him later as a result of this class project.

Co-curricular transcripts

Do any of you out there provide a Co-curricular transcript? If so, does the registrar's office handle the record keeping, etc. or does a different office take care of this? Do you use the same format/template as you use for the Academic transcript? Any suggestions you have will be much appreciated!!!

Check with Connecticut College - they seem to be one of the leaders in new technology for such records and transcripts.

Re: Co-curricular transcripts

About a year ago I asked a similar question and received invaluable information from Joe Cuseo on this subject. However, to follow up with my inquiry I would like to ask the question: What happens when it comes time to verify the information? My President and fellow administrators are concerned about having information on the transcript such as membership in a particular club and the student in fact did not do anything but attend an event and was not in a position of leadership. If this is to be an official document from the college it seems so overwhelming to check up on the information to see if

it is correct. Any thoughts on this out there would be appreciated.
