Freshman Advisory Committee

On August 16, 2004, Maggie Cosgrove from the University of Minnesota wrote to the list looking for information on establishing a Freshman Advisory Committee. Tara Marandos from Daniel Webster College replied looking for similar information on FACs and peer mentors. Leah Flynn from SUNY ESF responded to these requests with information on the Freshman Advisory Committee at her institution, as did Joni Webb Petschauer from Appalachian State.

Original Message: Freshmen Advisory Committee?

Greetings!
We are in the process of starting a Freshmen Advisory Committee, comprised of first-year students, to help guide the programming that we do and to learn more about the first-year experience on our campus. Does anyone else have a similar freshmen committee?

If so, how is your group structured? How do you recruit for the committee? What does the committee advise on? What has worked, and what has been challenging?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Please reply to me directly at fye@umn.edu.
Thank you!

Maggie Cosgrove

Re: Freshman Advisory Committee?

We are actually thinking about doing the same thing here at my school. Currently we have a freshman 101 class (DW101) but we may be moving towards peer mentors as well. If anyone has any information on peer mentoring, and/or Freshmen Advisory Committee, I would like the information also.

Re: Freshman Advisory Committee?

Hi Maggie-

At SUNY ESF we have a Freshmen Planning Committee that is also comprised of first-year students and their responsibilities are much of what you have outlined for your Freshmen Advisory Committee.

Our group is comprised of approximately 8 students that are representative of students that commute, live in learning communities, and don't live in learning communities. We ask of our Orientation Leaders to "keep an eye out" during Orientation Week for any first year students in their Orientation groups that would be a great asset to this committee. The committee primarily plans and organizes programs for the first year class as well as campus wide programs. They also perform community service as well and advertise these opportunities to their fellow first year peers. We are going into our third year of the Freshmen Planning Committee, and the most challenging thing has been trying to schedule a time to meet where everyone can make it!

They have been great groups in the past, and have helped immensely in helping us reach out to the freshmen class and to help create more of a freshmen class identity as a whole.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions.

Re: Freshman Advisory Committee?

Appalachian State University has an extensive Peer Leader program for its Freshman Seminar course and a Freshman Advisory Council that is made up of a representative from each section of Freshman Seminar. You can find out more from the website (http://www.freshmanseminar.appstate.edu/) or by contacting Beth Glass Marsh (glassek@appstate.edu or 828-262-2028).
