Incentives for Instructors of FYS

On September 7, 2004, Dawn Henderson from St. Augustine's College asked list members for recommendations for (non-monetary) compensation for first-year seminar instructors. Tara Marandos from Daniel Webster College recommended switching to having Student Orientation Leaders teach the course. Kara Sanders from Eastern Illinois University described her instructor recruitment efforts and various ways her institution shows its FYS instructors its gratitude. Vicki Stieha from Northern Kentucky University discussed the FYS connection to retention and persistence and how that helps with funding, and Autumn Grant-Kimball from Stonehill College suggested working out a tenure incentive for faculty who teach the course.

Hello Any and All who can help me

I have been in my position a little over a month now. When I first came on, my Director
told me that I needed to recruit instructors for our Freshman Seminar course. Many of
the professors I encountered turn down the offer, due to the fact that this is a volunteer
thing, non pay. It was a task, but I was able to get some committed instructors for this
year. I am trying to locate some resources or ideas that we can offer them as incentives
or as compensation for their time. Does anyone out there have any great ideas that you
can pass me or some funding sources?

I really wish we could pay these people, they are some amazing individuals.

For our first year course we use our SOLs, Student Orientation Leaders. They are paid $100 for helping out at orientation and then another $100 for teaching the class, so it's only $200 for the entire semester. Previously we had professors teach the class but many would not commit, therefore we moved to the SOLs. As the First Year Coordinator, I oversee the classes. We have our "staff" meetings once a week which is
also a class for the SOL in which they receive one credit for. The feedback is awesome to the SOLs teaching.

We pay our instructors although some faculty may teach the class in-load so they do not receive extra pay--that depends on their load in their departments. We also pay our staff who teach the course--not much, but a little. However, our best instructors are the ones who teach the course because they are committed to freshmen students. The best
recruiters are enthusiastic current faculty.

We ask our faculty to come to a thank-you lunch at the beginning of the spring semester--as we are starting to recruit. I thank them for their hard work, praise them for the exciting ideas they came up with in the fall semester, and hit them up for teaching the following fall. They also enjoy the small acknowledgement this brings and the chance to get together and discuss the semester with other teachers. I also ask them to be on the look out for people who might be interested in teaching forthe first time. While I do a lot of the recruiting myself--mostly from publicity in newsletters and talking to people at meetings, etc., people who routinely teach also talk to their colleagues, and we recruit many of the folks we need that way.

We have a 3 credit hour course with high expectations and a fairly involved training process. We pay our full time faculty and staff who teach the course $1400-2000 (pay increases with years of experience). Instructors must have a Master's Degree, though there are a few exceptions made given the level of responsibility the university has vested in the individual (i.e. there are a couple professional advisors w/o a Master's Degree who teach the course). Since we have 60 sections of the course, filling the university's needs with volunteers is simply untenable. Furthermore, the course's connection with retention and persistence makes the $1600 (average pay) a bargain!

Maybe you could work something out with your Tenure Committee so that doing this sort of thing works in an untenured faulty members favor when applying for tenure. Or at the very least offer a letter of recommendation.
