Orientation Administration
On March 14, 2005, Barbara Gaddis wrote to the list asking members what office runs Orientation on their campus. At her institution it falls under academic advising. Responses indicated that orientation programs can be administered by a variety of different offices, including Admissions, Enrollment Services, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and an Office of First Year Programs and Retention.

Original Message: orientation responsibility
Who in your university is responsible for orientation? At our university, it is run by the academic advising group. But we are very interested in exploring other models. Do you have a separate department that does orientation? Or do you do it out of Student
Life? Or academic advising? I would be very interested in what you do and whether you consider it to be effective, or if you would prefer some other structure.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: orientation responsibility
At Immaculata University, our New Student Orientation is a joint project carried out by Student Affairs and Academic Affairs...we have a committee comprised of staff from both groups as well as faculty and plan for the entire year for a weekend long program that includes registration.

Re: orientation responsibility
At our University, Enrollment Services has a separate office for Freshman Orientation. They coordinate the Orientation, send out the letters to the students to register for orientation (also post it online), set up the rooms we use for orientation, and design the
schedule of the people who will present and the days events. My office, Academic Center for Excellence, does the advising at the orientations.
Hope this helps. If you have further questions, please feel free to email me

Re: orientation responsibility
At Morehead State University, the responsibility for summer orientation, New Student Days and the freshmen seminar course is in the Office of First Year Programs and Retention. We are in the Division of Academic Affairs, but work closely with all divisions especially Student Affairs.

Re: orientation responsibility
At The University of Iowa, Orientation Services is a division of Admissions. Orientation Services is responsible for orientation program planning and delivery, but collaborates extensively with offices which are heavily involved (academic advising, student disability services, academic departments, etc.).

Re: orientation responsibility
Barbara:
At the University of Missouri-Kansas City the Office of Admissions is responsible for the creation of our summer orientation programs. They partner with other departments in Student Affairs as well as Academic Affairs. We are in the process of looking at our summer orientation programs and defining what is working well, what should be added, etc.

I am the Director of Orientation and First-Year Programs at Brandeis. Orientation used to run under Student Activities but they created my new department dedicated to first-year students.
