To learn how to SEARCH and how to GETPOST over e-mail do the following. SEARCH finds the e-mail(s); GETPOST sends you copies of the full text of the e-mail(s).

The examples below are for our FYE listserv. For the other, replace the letters "FYE" with the letters for the listserv for which you want to research.

GENERAL SEARCH
You can search the list's archives with the SEARCH command.

The "command" format is:

search <word(s) you want to search for> in <listname>

As an example, if you wanted to look at all the e-mails where "learning communities" were discussed among the FYE-list participants you would do the following:

listserv@LISTSERV.SC.EDU

Message:
search learning communities in fye-list

SEARCH BY DATE
If you wish to limit your search to a certain time period you would add "FROM/TO" language.

The "command" format is:
search <word(s) you want to search for> in <listname> FROM <date> TO <date>

Dates are in international format: yy/mm/dd

As an example, if you wanted to look at all the e-mails where "learning communities" were discussed among the FYE-list participants from April 19, 2001 to October 5, 2002, you would do the following:

Message:
search learning communities in fye-list from 01/04/19 to 02/10/05

GETPOST
After you have sent in your command to search the list, you will receive an e-mail with a list of 'hits' for your search. Here is an example of one hit.

The first number, the item number (003656) is the number you will use when you ask the listserv to send to you the full text of the email. Drop the leading zeros (ex. 3656).

At the bottom of the list of these hits will be the exact sentence you use to get copies of these e-mails.

To order a copy of this posting, send the following command:

GETPOST FYE-LIST 3656

You can copy, cut, and paste this command into a new e-mail or retype it into a new e-mail.

If you had multiple postings you wanted to get, list all the item numbers, with a space in between each.
