Learning Interdependence: A Case Study of the International/Intercultural Education of First-Year College Students
David J. Bachner, Laurence J. Malone, Mary C. Snider

Publication Date- 2001
ISBN-1-889271-35-7
203 pages
Cost-$30.00

Administrator, faculty, and student voices come together to describe a unique experiment in intercultural education at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Challenging the notion that study abroad programs are best suited for "mature" students, faculty and administrators designed an intercultural, interdisciplinary course for first-year students, spanning an entire academic year. The book includes information on program development and student outcomes, with an appendix featuring syllabi from six courses based on the model. Learning Interdependence is equal parts travel log, curriculum design guide, and personal diary. As we struggle with the meaning of education on a shrinking, increasingly connected planet, this book offers a bold new way of thinking about teaching and learning in the first college year.

Moral Action in Young Adulthood
John M. Whiteley, Norma Yokota, and Associates

Publication Date- 1999
ISBN-1-889271-26-8
280 pages
Cost- $30.00

This book, addressing moral action in young adulthood, is an extension of the Sierra Project which began at the University of California, Irvine in the middle 1970s. The original Sierra Project was both a curricular development initiative for first-year college students and a longitudinal study of growth and development of character over four years of undergraduate study. In this ground breaking follow-up, the researchers have returned to the original Sierra students to measure their continuing growth in moral reasoning and to understand the nature and meaning of moral action in response to the moral dilemmas inherent in everyday life.

These guidelines provide institutions with a framework for assessing the first-year experience on their own campuses. Originally developed by John Gardner in 1990, the Guidelines for Evaluating The First-Year Experience have been revised and updated by the staff of the Pew-funded Policy Center on the First Year of College with input from 65 institutions participating in five regional consortia focused on first-year assessment issues. The Guidelines are now available in two special editions, one focusing on two-year institutions and one focusing on four-year institutions. If you are looking for a way to evaluate the first-year experience on your campus, make the Guidelines your starting point!
