Meaning and Spirituality in the Lives of College Faculty: A Study of Values, Authenticity, and Stress
Alexander W. Astin and Helen S. Astin,
with the assistance of Anthony L. Antonio, John Astin, and Christine M. Cress

Publication Date- 1999
42 pages
Cost-Free ($3 shipping and handling charge)

In 1997 the Fetzer Institute contracted with UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute to study the role of meaning and spirituality in faculty life. This report summarizes the findings from 70 personal interviews conducted with faculty from a variety of disciplines in four California colleges and universities. Filled with excerpts from the faculty interviews, Meaning and Spirituality paints a poignant picture of the struggle of faculty to find meaning and authenticity in institutional environments often at odds with individual values and with the values of liberal education. The authors provide recommendations for future research on this topic.
