Course Description
This 3-credit hour course will provide an overview of issues in medical school and
health care that are relevant to pre-medical students’ medical education and future careers. It will include a selective examination of factors that relate to the transition from college to medical school and the issues in health care that will influence the students’ medical information and future practice.
This course will introduce students to the issues with which they will contend in their first year of medical school and in their future careers

| 2. Current Events Portfolio: |
15% of grade |
One newspaper article each week regarding a health care issue with a 1 page synopsis of the article and how it relates to you and your future as a physician. We will ask for an impromptu synopsis presentation to the class every week. |

| 3. Reaction Papers on Request: |
15% of grade |
Reaction to speaker/topic, 2-3 pages. Papers will be graded on development and support of your ideas, depth of critical thinking and complexity of topic, organization of paper, and grammar, spelling and punctuation. |

25 % of Grade |
| 5. Final Exam |

25% of Grade |
3-4/group, research with written paper and 20 minute presentation, regarding a health care issue we will assign. |

| 6. Class Participation |
|
20% of grade |
Attendance at 13 classes; each absence, beyond 1, will result in a letter grade loss for each absence; contribution to class discussions, quiz grades, questions asked of guest speakers. Quizzes may include questions on any material presented in class or in reading assignments. |
