UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

Information for specific audiences:

The 18th Annual First-Year Reading Experience was held on Monday, August 15, 2011 in the Carolina Coliseum. During summer orientation, students were provided with a copy of No Impact Man by Colin Beavan. The book included a Reader's Guide to aid students in identifying key themes of the text, as well as prepare students for small group discussions that took place at the First-Year Reading Experience.

On the morning of the event, all first-year students gathered at the Carolina Coliseum at 8:30 am, and Dr. Helen Doerpinghaus, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, welcomed everyone. This year's keynote speaker was the author of No Impact Man, Colin Beavan. Following the keynote session, students participated in small group discussions of the text. In an effort to encourage students to start making less of an impact, all who attended the event received a reusable water bottle. The reusable bottle can be used at any dining facility on campus and filled with the beverage of their choice for a discounted price!

The themes of the book will be carried throughout the year in various events and opportunities available to students. Visit the Sustainable Carolina website for more information on the great programming planned for 2011-2012!

Each year, graphic design students from the ARTS 346 course Series Development and Practice create a poster that they believe portrays the essence of the First-Year Reading Experience selection. The image above was selected as the marketing image for the 2011 event. Click here to see the participating students present their submissions.
