The First-Year Reading Experience
The 19th Annual First-Year Reading Experience was held on Monday, August 20, 2012 in the Carolina Coliseum. During summer orientation, students were provided with a copy of the 2012 selection, Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem.
The book included a Reader’s Guide to aid students in identifying key themes of the text, as well as prepare students for small group discussions that will take place at the First-Year Reading Experience.
On the morning of the event, all first-year students gathered at the Carolina Coliseum at 8:30 am, and Dr. Helen Doerpinghaus, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, welcomed everyone. This year’s keynote speaker was be the author of Motherless Brooklyn, Jonathan Lethem. Following the keynote session, students participated in small group discussions of the text.
The 2013 First-Year Reading Selection Committee is currently in the process of choosing a book for the 20th Annual First-Year Reading Experience scheduled for Monday, August 19, 2013.
