James Laura, former student government vice president and president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, says he'll remember the people who have helped shape him as a student, a leader and a young man.

Specifically, Laura said, his gratitude is to a cadre that includes Student Affairs Vice President Dr. Dennis Pruitt, political-science professor Dr. Dan Sabia, Student Life Director Jerry Brewer and university President Dr. Andrew Sorensen.

He says he learned a great deal from each of them.

“Dr. Sabia was the first person who got me very excited about my studies,” Laura said. “It was my sophomore year, and his energy and passion ignited my interest and imagination. I'm in awe of Dennis Pruitt. He is so intelligent, well read, rational and always able to make the right decisions. Jerry Brewer knows how to connect with students and taught me how to communicate with, and learn from, others. Dr. Sorensen is a brilliant leader, creating connections and making decisions. The Bridge Program is one example of his forward thinking. His contributions to the university and state will be better known in 10 years.”

Recognized as an Outstanding Senior at the university's annual Honors and Awards Day, Laura said students should get involved often and early in a variety of activities.

“Don't downplay the social aspects of college life,” said Laura, who says his best memories include football games and tailgates, being elected to leadership roles in student government and his fraternity and organizing the annual Carolina-Clemson blood drive.

“I've learned that everything is manageable and that I can remain focused while taking things in stride,” he said.

That's a good lesson to have learned since Laura will be attending law school at the university. His goal: to become a sport and entertainment lawyer.

“It seemed like a good fit, combining my love of sports and being around creative individuals with my passion for arguing,” he said.
