“Talk to your teachers on the first day.”

This is Michael Blew's advice to first-year students.

“Professors have excellent contacts and resources that are invaluable for students to access,” said Blew, who holds a Carolina Scholarship and a Palmetto Fellowship. “I've found a willingness of professors in all disciplines to take a true interest in their students and to go out of their way to assist them in any way they can.”

Blew calls the caliber of the South Carolina Honors College “truly Palmetto Ivy” and says that undergraduate research has enriched his college experience.

“I have been involved in chemistry research since first semester of freshman year,” said Blew, who has been involved in the medical field since age 16. “It has been an excellent learning experience and has led to at least one published paper.

“I have been a volunteer firefighter and EMT. A career in nursing will allow me to continue caring for others while advancing my knowledge base and education level,” Blew said.

Blew will join the nursing staff at Providence Hospital in its cardiac critical-care unit after graduation. He says nursing professor Dr. Kara Jones-Schubart helped foster his love for cardiac critical care and his goal of being an acute-care nurse practitioner, which he will pursue with continued nursing studies at the university.

“The university has helped me grow personally and professionally into not only a nurse that will provide high-quality care but as an individual who has a greater self awareness and direction in life,” Blew said.
