Give It Up for Good 2015
From April 27 to May 12 University Housing at the University of South Carolina collected 19 tons (38,169 lbs) of food, clothing, household goods, furniture and appliances donated by students as they moved out of the residence halls. This was 2 more tons than in 2014. Items collected included 65 mini fridges, 71 microwaves, 48 brooms and 2 hula hoops. Food and plastic bags were donated directly to Harvest Hope Food Bank, all other items were stored, sorted and priced for a yard sale to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
The items were set up on Friday, May 22 for a Faculty and Staff preview sale for University employees. This preview sale raised $5,019. The public sale on Saturday, May 23 raised an additional $9,914 for a total donation of $13,933.35 for the Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity. This is an increase of over $4,000 from 2014. UofSC will use the funds for a project with the organization this fall. Items that were not sold at the end of the yard sale were donated to Palmetto Thrift Store and Goodwill.
