PRE-MED HANDBOOK
APPENDIX B - Medical School
Admissions Requirements/Recommendations
The following information may
assist you in preparing for eventual application to medical
school. Take this information to your academic advisor while
planning your course of study. Some choices will vary depending
on your major. If you have questions, feel free to call the
Office of Pre-Professional Advising.
- Two semesters of lecture
and laboratory of each of the following sciences are
required:
General Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
General Biology
General Physics
- About two-thirds of US
medical schools require one or two English courses.
- About one-third of US
medical schools require one or two semesters of college
mathematics; a few require calculus while most recommend
it.
- Some schools have
additional requirements.
- Some schools will not
accept AP exemption in these courses without upper level
coursework in the specific areas. Check the MSAR* for
each schools policy.
* For individual school
requirements, consult the resource, Medical
School Admission Requirements, published by the
Association of American Medical Colleges. This is available in
our office.
A typical program of study to
meet the science requirements at USC might be as follows:
| |
YEAR 1 |
YEAR 2 |
YEAR 3 |
| Fall |
Chemistry 111
Biology 101 & 101L |
Chemistry 333 &
331L
|
Physics 201 & 201L
or 211& 211L* |
| Spring |
Chemistry 112 &
112L
Biology 102 & 102L |
Chemistry 334 &
332L
|
Physics 202 & 202L
or 212 & 212L* |
These courses should all be
taken before the MCAT is attempted. The April MCAT is strongly
recommended.
* If you take the 211/212
series, it is important that you study the 201/202 series text
while preparing for the MCAT. The 201/202 series covers more breadth
of information, all of which is tested on the MCAT.
