MINOR IN MEDICAL HUMANITIES
BROADEN YOUR SCOPE
Medical practices are
changing.
Patients' needs are changing.
Medical technologies are changing.
More than ever before,
physicians and health care professionals must be aware of the
ethical, economic, social and political dimensions of the medical
field. Radical change is certainly the present and future of
medical science. To prepare for the transformations on the
medical horizon, medical schools are looking for students with a
broad background in the humanities.
If you plan to go into medicine
or a health-related field, you should explore the benefits of a
minor in medical humanities. Admission to the minor requires a
3.30 or higher GPA and at least 30 hours of college credit.
You'll find the University's undergraduate studies bulletin at: http://www.sc.edu/bulletin/ugrad/LibArtHm.html.
The Minor in Medical Humanities'
inception was funded in part by a grant from the Fullerton
Foundation as part of a larger general Medical Humanities project
on campus (directed by George Khushf).
Reproductive technologies,
genetic screening, life sustaining interventions - all raise
difficult questions. A medical humanities minor from the
University of South Carolina can build a foundation for
insightful responses. The minor requires 18 credit hours and
enhances study in the sciences while offering benefits such as:
- Honors College courses in
medical humanities
- Opportunities for
undergraduate research
- A stimulating curriculum
including philosophy, anthropology, economics, classics,
government, psychology, sociology, business, nursing,
criminal justice, and others.
