Undergraduate Research Program
'Providing Research Opportunities for Student Development in
the Sciences'
The Howard Hughes program is offered and managed by the
Department of Biological Sciences through the College of Arts
and Sciences. This program generally supports research projects
geared toward the sciences. While many projects are biology- or
biomedically-related, other topics are welcome. For the
greatest chances of success, make arrangements for your research
projects with your mentor in advance.
Award Winners
The Howard Hughes program offers two sessions per year: academic year
research ($1000 stipend; October May) and summer research ($3000 stipend; May
August).
ELIGIBITY: Students must be majors within the College of Arts and
Sciences (CAS) and their mentor must be from the CAS, School of Medicine, or
Pharmacy. NOTE: This program is NOT limited to Biology majors.
DEADLINE: Academic Year Friday, September 14, 2007 by 5:00pm
Summer Friday April 11, 2008 by 5:00pm
TO APPLY:
- Complete application form
- Submit an official or unofficial transcript of your grades
- Request a letter of support from a mentor or research advisor
All of the above must be submitted to: the College of Arts and Sciences
Deans Office, PSC 109 (to: Dr. Loren Knapp or a member of his staff) by
5:00pm on the stated deadline above for an application to be considered
complete.
For the greatest chances of success, make arrangements for your research
projects in advance.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
In addition to completion of the research project, students awarded a Howard
Hughes grant MUST:
- Attend weekly meetings during the academic year or twice-weekly meeting
during the summer program
- Prepare a publication for a symposium series
- Make a presentation of the project at an end-of-session symposium
- Present at Discovery Day (Academic year requirement only)
