LAST REVISION: June 23, 1998
DATE: February 1,1995
Policy for: Columbia and Regional Campuses
Procedure for: Columbia and Regional Campuses
Authorized by: Jerome D. Odom
Issued by: Provost's Office
________________________________________________________________
I. Policy
The University does not award tenure at the time of appointment, or
appoint new faculty members at the rank of professor, unless such an
appointment can be demonstrated to be in the University's interest.
II. Procedure
A. Permission to use award of tenure, and/or appointment at the rank
of professor in employment negotiations with potential faculty members
must be secured in advance from the President’s Office through appropriate
channels.
1. The Tenure and Promotion Committee appropriate to the unit shall vote
on the award of tenure and/or appointment at the rank of professor by
secret ballot. The Committee shall use the unit’s current criteria for
tenure and faculty rank promotion consideration in determining their
recommendation. The tally of votes and any written comments from Committee
members, as well as the candidate's credentials, are forwarded through
channels as part of the dean's recommendation to the provost.
2. The provost will review the recommendation of the dean and the
accompanying materials and will attach his/her recommendation to the
president.
B. The president will review the recommendations and materials
contained in the candidate's file and determine whether a positive
recommendation to the Board of Trustees is justified. The president
will notify the dean and the provost of the decision.
C. The Board of Trustees, acting upon the President's recommendation,
approves all awards of tenure. Appointments at rank of professor shall be
reported to the Board of Trustees.
III. Reason for Latest Revision
The purpose of the latest revision is to streamline the review process
once the request has left the academic unit.
