Dr. Chris Plyler
Vice Provost and Executive Dean for Extended
University
Dr. Plyler provides leadership and focus for the teaching,
scholarship, and service missions of the Regional Campuses of
the University of South Carolina. As Vice Provost, he is also
responsible for the division of Continuing Education including
the evening program, the military program at Fort Jackson;
noncredit activities, and regional campus financial aid
services. He is also responsible for USC's Extended Campus which
includes the University Center in Greenville and the Lowcountry
Graduate Center. The Vice-Provost and Executive Dean serves on
the President's Executive Council and the Council of
Academic Deans.
Dr. Plyler is a 1973 graduate of Clemson University with a
Bachelor of Arts in English. He earned his Masters Degree in
Higher Education from the University of South Carolina and his
Ph.D. in 1978 from Florida State University.
Prior to his appointment in July 1999 as Vice Provost for
Regional Campuses and Continuing Education, Dr. Plyler served
as: Dean of the Beaufort Campus (July 1990 - July 1999); Vice
Chancellor for Student Services at USC Aiken (August 1982 - July
1990), and as Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at
USC Salkehatchie (November 1978 - August 1982). In addition to
his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Plyler is a
Professor in the College of Education Department of Educational
Leadership and Policies.
Throughout his tenure, he has served on numerous institutional
and University-wide task forces and committees. Dr. Plyler has
taught at both undergraduate and graduate levels and has
published on the subject of collective bargaining in higher
education. He is an active member in seven professional
associations.
