Board Members
Raymond
S. Greenberg, MD, PhD
President- Medical University of South Carolina
On January 1, 2000, Raymond S. Greenberg became the eighth
President of the Medical University of South Carolina. A native of
Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Dr. Greenberg graduated from the
University of North Carolina in 1976 with highest honors in
chemistry. He completed his medical studies at Duke University in
1979 and received a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard
University in 1980. Dr. Greenberg undertook pediatrics training at
Boston Children’s Hospital before returning to North Carolina for
a PhD in epidemiology in 1983.
Dr. Greenberg joined the faculty of Emory University where he
conducted cancer research. In 1990, when Emory University decided
to establish a School of Public Health, he was appointed as its
first dean. In 1995, Dr. Greenberg was recruited to the Medical
University of South Carolina as Vice President for Academic
Affairs and Provost. Five years later, he was selected by the
board of trustees to succeed James B. Edwards as President of the
Medical University.
The author of about 150 scientific publications, Dr. Greenberg is
nationally recognized for his research on cancer and he has served
on many national scientific advisory boards. He and his wife Leah,
who is very active in the local arts community, live on Sullivan’s
Island. |

Don Herriott
Roche Carolina, Inc.
Mr. Herriott, President and General Manager of Roche Carolina,
Inc., was recognized as an Ambassador for his leadership in
organizations that enhance the education and quality of life of
the state’s citizens.
Mr. Herriott has served on the boards of the Greater Florence
Chamber of Commerce, the Commission on Higher Education and the
South Carolina Technology Alliance. He chaired the Governor’s
Workforce Education Taskforce, the South Carolina Chamber of
Excellence in Education Committee and the Florence School District
One Technology Council.
Mr. Herriott currently serves as a board member of the South
Carolina Board of Economic Advisors and the Palmetto Institute,
the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics
Foundation, the South Carolina Research Authority and is a member
of the Palmetto Business Forum. He is also the founding chair of
the School Foundation, and endowment that has raised $750,000 to
support local schools. |

Pike
Powers
Fulbright and Jaworski Attorney
Partner- Austin, Texas
A partner since 1978, Pike Powers is partner-in-charge of
Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P.’s Austin office. Mr. Powers was
executive assistant to Governor Mark White in 1983 and from 1972
to 1979 represented Jefferson County in the Texas House of
Representatives. He has extensive experience in handling complex
legal and political issues before state courts and federal courts,
as well as federal and state agencies.
Mr. Powers has been a member of the Board of Directors of the
State Bar of Texas and has held various posts as well in the
American Bar Association and in the Texas and American Bar
Foundations. He is a former chairman of the Board of Austin
Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Powers is a member of the Maritime Law
Association of the United States, the Federation of Insurance and
Corporate Counsel, and the National Association of Railroad Trial
Counsel.
Mr. Powers received a B.A. in 1962 from Lamar University and a
J.D. in 1965 from the University of Texas. He was admitted in 1965
to practice law in Texas. |

G. Larry Wilson
Trelys Corporation
Larry Wilson joined the Board of Educational Foundation in 1992
and served as president of the University of South Carolina
Educational Foundation for four years. He chairs the Public
Advocacy Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee. His
term as Chair Emeritus begins in July 2004. He is managing general
partner of Trelys Corporation in Columbia.
Mr. Wilson graduated from USC with a B.S. degree in marketing in
1969; in 1970, he completed an M.B.A. He began his career with the
Seibels Bruce Group, an insurance company, when he was a
19-year-old sophomore at USC. After holding various management
positions within the firm, Mr. Wilson was charged with creating
the PMS division of the company in 1974. Regarded as the founder
of PMSC—which would later become Mynd Corporation—Mr. Wilson
served as its chief executive officer from its incorporation in
1981 until its merger with Computer Science Corporation in
December 2000.
Mr. Wilson has been named one of the top three CEOs in the
computer software and services industry five times by the Wall
Street Transcript. Engaged in many leadership and civic
activities, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the
USC Moore School of Business and the Yale University Cultural
Achievement Award. |

I. Whittle, Jr.

Since its inception in 1986, Mack I. Whittle has served as
President and Chief Executive Officer of the South Financial
Group. Mr. Whittle is also a Director of The South Financial Group
and serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Carolina First Bank,
the largest South Carolina-based commercial bank.
The South Financial Group is a financial holding company focused
on fast-growing markets in the Southeast. The South Financial
Group has approximately $11 billion in total assets and
approximately 150 branch offices in South Carolina, North
Carolina, and Florida.
Mr. Whittle began his banking career in 1969 with Bankers Trust of
South Carolina. From 1969 to 1986, he served in several capacities
including Trust Officer, Vice President of Commercial Business
Development, City Executive for Myrtle Beach, and Senior Vice
President and Regional Officer. In January 1986, Bankers Trust of
South Carolina merged with NCNB. Mr. Whittle resigned from NCNB in
May 1986 to form Carolina First. Mr. Whittle founded Carolina
First to serve individuals and small to medium sized businesses
that were neglected as a result of takeover activities of South
Carolina institutions by larger out-of-state banks.
Mr. Whittle is Emeritus of the Board of Trustees for the
University of South Carolina. In 2003, Mr. Whittle was appointed
to the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts at the JFK
Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Mr. Whittle
currently serves on many state and community boards, including the
South Carolina Arts Foundation, The Palmetto Business Forum, South
Carolina State Museum Foundation, Midlands Business Leadership
Group, and the Greenville Symphony Advisory Board. Mr. Whittle is
the current chair of South Carolina Chamber of
Commerce. Mr. Whittle is a Past President of the South Carolina
Bankers Association and was named the organization’s “Outstanding
Young Banker” in 1988. In addition, Mr. Whittle created the
Carolina First Bank’s commitment to elevate the quality of
education in South Carolina and other markets served by the bank.
Ion 2003, Mr. Whittle was awarded the Blue Ridge Council Boy
Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award. In 1993, Mr.
Whittle was distinguished as the South Carolina Entrepreneur of
the Year for Financial Services. In 1994, he was the University of
South Carolina College of Business Distinguished Alumnus. Mr.
Whittle was awarded the Whitney M. Young Humanitarian Award by the
Greenville Urban League in 1995.
