Welcome
Welcome to the Office of Research and Health Sciences at the
University of South Carolina!
By providing our faculty and students with the best opportunities and resources possible, we seek to improve the lives of others through innovative discovery in the humanities; technology; and the environmental, health, and social sciences.
We are proud of the fact that in the fiscal year 2007, USC’s sponsored program and research awards totaled $185 million, up 6.7 percent from the previous year despite exceptionally intense competition throughout academe for NSF funding (here our faculty achieved a 23 percent increase) and other traditional funding sources.
While dependent on many variables, including federal and state budgets, prospects for the continued growth of research funding at USC appear positive. Two faculty recruiting plans will bring a total of 250 additional faculty members to the campus during the next several years. The Centenary Plan, sponsored by the University's Research and Health Sciences division, is recruiting faculty whose primary goal will be to compete successfully for research awards.
In addition, development of the University's Innovista research district (http://innovista.sc.edu/) continues with the opening of the Horizon Center and Discovery Plaza facilities scheduled in 2008-2009, three tenant announcements, and continued progress on several research initiatives in alternative energy, computational science, nanotechnology and biomedical science. The attendant excitement is as palpable as that surrounding our collaborations with other research institutions and organizations.
These collaborations include Health Sciences South Carolina (a $200 million collaborative involving three of our state's largest universities and three health systems to increase health sciences research and improve the health status of citizens), the Savannah River National Laboratory, and private partners such as Intel, Kemet, and Voridian. Such partnerships not only promote discoveries and innovation within service and manufacturing sectors, but also train a new generation of specialists to improve the workforce and our state's economy.
I invite you to learn more about our research and health sciences programs by browsing this web site or calling my office at 803-777-5458. We would love to share our enthusiasm about improving the lives of others through scholarship and innovative discovery.
