Student Research Spotlight

Francesca Simeone

What are you researching?

To assess optimization of clinical outcomes and standardization of treatment in pediatric patients with operative bone and soft tissue infections.

How could the results benefit patients?

The purpose of this study is to analyze diagnostic and therapeutic management of pediatric patients with musculoskeletal infections requiring surgical intervention to assess improvement in coordination of care and treatment strategies to decrease potential complications, decrease treatment burden, and shorten duration of stay. By expanding the study population to include complicated and noncomplicated cases, the aim is to improve the care of patients by expanding upon preexisting literature while also standardizing treatment.

Tell us why you enjoy research.

I enjoy research because it allows me to learn more about the field as a whole, while developing novel solutions to complex problems . Ideally, the projects we create will help advance the field to improve delivery of patient care.

What advice would you give to other students considering doing a research project?

Find mentors who support you and help develop your ideas into feasible projects. Not only is their advice critical for your project since they are experts in the field, their support can be extremely helpful in many areas outside of research!
