Academic Affiliates

An appointment as an affiliate may be considered for individuals who, by virtue of their profession and/or expertise, will make a significant contribution to the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. Academic affiliates actively contribute to the mission of the college through participation in its instructional programs educating future pharmacists and/or pharmaceutical scientists.

About

Academic affiliates are non-salaried individuals sponsored by an academic unit who volunteer and are allowed to perform specific activities related to instructional programs. Affiliate appointments are uncompensated university appointments and persons holding affiliate appointments earn no credit toward tenure. Academic affiliates must be approved by the college dean. The Office of the Provost oversees the appointment process for all academic affiliates and the College of Pharmacy complies with the university’s policy for affiliate appointments (UNIV 2.50).

All affiliates are eligible for a university identification card, i.e., CarolinaCard, and associated privileges as designated by the college. Examples of possible associated privileges are:

  • Access to USC computer network and systems housing general access data
  • Access to University email account
  • Access to Blackboard
  • Access to Blatt PE Center and other recreational facilities
  • Eligibility to purchase tickets to Athletic Events
  • Eligibility to apply for Parking Permits
  • Access to library resources such as electronic indexes and journals at all University library locations
  • Access to Carolina Shuttle service

University privileges associated with the appointment of an academic affiliate may vary based upon the affiliate’s participation with the college’s instructional programs. The university and the college reserve the right to allow or disallow privileges according to availability and need. All privileges are subject to availability and payment of associated fees, if any.

As volunteers, affiliates are not eligible for employee benefits such as annual and sick leave or medical, dental or any other employment-based insurance program. As a result of this volunteer association, affiliates are not eligible for nor entitled to any institutional benefits, including Worker’s Compensation.

  • The individual will demonstrate their commitment as a practitioner, educator, scholar and/or community service advocate. The individual will describe ways in which they will make a significant contribution to the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy through active contributions to the mission of the college and through participation in the college’s instructional programs educating future pharmacists and/or pharmaceutical scientists. The aforementioned should be outlined in the cover letter submitted as part of the application  (see Application Process below).
  • The individual agrees to provide annual availability for student rotations to the College of Pharmacy Office of Experiential Education  if the affiliate is a practicing pharmacist.
  • Academic affiliates are required to comply with all University policies and procedures including, but not limited to conflicts of interest, discrimination and harassment, security, information and communication technology. Affiliate status does not constitute employment and does not fall under the purview of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • An affiliate who is not a United States citizen must hold or obtain a US immigration status appropriate to the nature of their appointment.

Applications are reviewed by the USC College of Pharmacy in January and September of each year.

Candidates must submit by December 1 (for January consideration) or August 15 (for September consideration) of each year:

  • Cover letter (1 page max.) outlining justification for request of appointment as outlined in criteria
  • Current Curriculum Vitae (5 page max.)
  • One letter of recommendation (from internal or external referee)
  • Academic Affiliate Information Form [pdf]
  • Copy of academic transcript sent directly from the candidate’s institution of higher education. For non-US academic credentials, an independent equivalency evaluation from an approved organization must also be submitted.

Candidates for affiliate appointment will be required to complete a background check. Candidates seeking appointment as an academic affiliate will be reviewed by the USC College of Pharmacy Professional Track Committee. A recommendation will be made by the committee and forwarded to the Dean’s office for final consideration.

For appointment of an academic affiliate, the sponsoring unit must submit the following documentation to the Division of Human Resources:

  • Affiliate Appointment Form
  • Letter of Appointment from the Dean stating terms and conditions of appointment
  • For non-US citizen affiliates: Advance Notice of Prospective Non-US Citizen Sponsored Visitor or Employee (Form IS-1)

Additionally, the college will maintain a file including the academic affiliate's curriculum vitae, letter of recommendation, academic transcript, and background check report.

Terms of Appointment

Affiliate appointments are not to exceed five (5) years per appointment. The USC College of Pharmacy will indicate the type and length of appointment on the Affiliate Form and in the Letter of Appointment during the affiliate appointment approval process. Typically, appointments are for 5 years, after which the candidate can re-apply.
