Instructions for moving e-mail messages from Gamecock E-mail (GEM) to the University E-mail system.           PRINTER FRIENDLY

In order to access your previous GEM e-mail for transferring to the new e-mail system, you will need to change your IMAP settings to reflect the new temporary name for GEM.

Instructions for:

** If you use Outlook Express, you will not be able to use Outlook Express with the new e-mail system due to the security requirements of the new University e-mail system. We apologize for any inconvenience. This is a Microsoft design limitation. **

For Outlook 2003
To configure Outlook to access your old GEM account e-mail:

  1. Start Outlook
  2. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  3. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, select View or change existing e-mail accounts, then click Next.
  4. Select the account name that is used for GEM access (i.e.: mailbox.sc.edu) and then click Change.
  5. In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) box, replace the contents with mailbox-old.sc.edu.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.

    Outlook will now be able to access your previous e-mail on the GEM system.

    To copy your GEM e-mail to your local computer
     
  8. Select Personal Folders.
  9. On the File menu, select New | Folder.
  10. Type in GemMail and then click OK. (you may need to select Personal Folders as the location to place this new folder)
  11. Expand ‘mailbox.sc.edu’ (your GEM account folder) by selecting the ‘+’ to the left of the name. The symbol should now be a ‘-‘.
  12. Select Inbox from this list.
  13. On the Edit menu, click Select All. This will select all current mail in your GEM Inbox.
  14. On the Edit menu, click Copy to Folder.
  15. Select the GemMail folder from your list of Personal Folders, then click OK.
    This will copy all current items in you GEM Inbox to your local computer.
  16. For each remaining folder listed in the ‘mailbox.sc.edu’ list, perform the following:
    1. Select the folder.
    2. On the Edit menu, click Copy to Folder.
    3. Select the GemMail folder from your list of Personal Folders, then click OK

    Note: Do not copy the Virus or Spam Folder unless you are sure that you require the items in the folder.

    To reconfigure Outlook to access the new Exchange system
     

  17. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  18. In the Email Accounts dialog box, select View or change existing e-mail accounts, then click Next.
  19. Select the account name that is used for GEM access (i.e.: mailbox.sc.edu) and then click Change.
  20. In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) box, insert imap.mail.sc.edu.
  21. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, insert asmtp.mail.sc.edu
  22. Select More Settings.
  23. Select the Outgoing tab. Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
  24. Select the Advanced tab.
  25. Select both items for This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
  26. The Incoming server (IMAP) should now reflect 993
  27. Set the Outgoing server (SMTP) to reflect 2525
  28. Click OK
  29. Click Next.
  30. Click Finish.
  31. You may wish to restart your client to refresh your view.

    To copy your e-mail item into the new Exchange e-mail system
     
  32. Select the GemMail folder
  33. On the Edit menu, click Copy to Folder.
  34. Select mail account folder (mailbox.sc.edu).

For Thunderbird users:
To configure Thunderbird to access your old GEM account e-mail:

  1. Start Thunderbird.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
  3. In the Account Settings dialog box, select Server Settings from the left hand menu.
  4. In the Server Name field, replace the contents with mailbox-old.sc.edu
  5. Click OK.

    Thunderbird will now be able to access your previous e-mail on the GEM system.

    To copy your GEM e-mail to your local computer

     
  6. Select Local Folders.
  7. On the File menu, select New | Folder.
  8. Type in GemMail then OK. (you may need to select Local Folders as the location to place this new folder)
  9. Expand the ‘webmail.sc.edu’ folder (your GEM account folder) by selecting the ‘+’ to the left of the name. The symbol should now be a ‘-‘.
  10. Select Inbox from this list.
  11. On the Edit menu, click Select All. This will select all current mail in your GEM Inbox.
  12. On the Message menu, select Copy | Local Folders | GemMail.
    This will copy all current items in your Gem Inbox to your local computer.
  13. Select GemMail, for each folder that has mail that you wish to migrate to the new e-mail system, you will need to create a folder for it or copy the message to the general GemMail folder. You may find it easier to select a folder from your GEM folder list and drag the folder to the GemMail folder.

    Note: Do not copy the Virus or Spam Folder unless you are sure that you require the items in the folder.

    To reconfigure Thunderbird to access the new University e-mail system
     
  14. On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
  15. In the Account Settings dialog box, select Server Settings from the left hand menu.
  16. In the Server Name field, replace the contents with imap.mail.sc.edu
  17. In the Secure Settings box, select SSL.
  18. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left hand menu.
  19. From the Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings list select the entry for smtp.sc.edu and then click Edit.
  20. In the Settings box replace the contents of the Server Name field with asmtp.mail.sc.edu.
  21. Change the contents of the Port to 2525.
  22. Under Security and Authentication, under Use secure connection, select TLS, then select OK. (the User Name field should already have your USC network username, if not, insert it here)
  23. Click OK.
  24. You may wish to restart your client to refresh your view.

    To copy your e-mail items into the new Exchange e-mail system
     
  25. Select the GemMail folder
  26. Click drag the GemMail folder to the top most folder of the imap.mail.sc.edu folder list.

For Entourage users:

To configure Entourage to access your old GEM account e-mail:

  1. Start Entourage.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  3. Select the account name that is used for GEM access (i.e.: mailbox.sc.edu) and then click Edit.
  4. In the Receiving mail (IMAP) box, replace the contents with mailbox-old.sc.edu.
  5. Click OK.

    Outlook will now be able to access your previous e-mail on the GEM system.

    To copy your GEM e-mail to your local computer
     
  6. Select Folders on my computer.
  7. On the File menu, select New | Sub-Folder.
  8. Type in GemMail to name the folder.
  9. Expand ‘mailbox.sc.edu’ (your GEM account folder) by selecting the down arrow to the left of the name.
  10. Select Inbox from this list and then click on the email window.
  11. On the Edit menu, click Select All. This will select all current mail in your GEM Inbox.
  12. On the Toolbar, click Move.
  13. Select the GemMail folder from your list of Personal Folders, click Move.
    This will copy all current items in you GEM Inbox to your local computer.
  14. For each remaining folder listed in the ‘mailbox.sc.edu’ list, perform the following:
    1. Select the folder.
    2. On the Toolbar, click Move.
    3. Select the GemMail folder from your list of Folders on my computer, then click Move.

    Note: Do not copy the Virus or Spam Folder unless you are sure that you require the items in the folder.

    To reconfigure Entourage to access the new Exchange system

  15. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  16. Select the account name that is used for GEM access (i.e.: mailbox.sc.edu) and then click Edit.
  17. In the Receiving mail (IMAP) box, insert imap.mail.sc.edu then select Click here for advanced receiving options and click This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL) port: 993.
