A. Placement of numerals
1) Place superior numerals after any punctuation mark, except the dash or a closing parenthesis if the reference is made to material within the parenthesis or before the dash.
2) Set footnote figures after the work or paragraph or phrase which is explained or amplified.

B. Reference marks should be used in this order:
* asterisk or star
** double asterisk
dagger
double dagger
C. For bibliographies, preferred style varies by discipline; be consistent.
