USC  THIS SITE

Left Navigation Bar
This area of the template is where the majority of page navigation links are located. The idea is to keep menu items in this area organized into a limited number of broad categories that remain constant as the reader navigates through the site. Notice, for example, that the menu items in the Left Navigation Bar (LNAV) on this site remain the same on all pages while additional, page-specific links are added to the Header Navigation Bar and Content Area. This allows readers to understand the navigation quickly and creates a consistent map to which they can refer, no matter where they are in the site.
Your preferences for LNAV organization may help you determine which of the four template styles will work best for you. For example, in the Tool-Tip Split Template, the Left Navigation Bar is divided by the black Tool-Tip Bar into two sections, (garnet bar with white menu items above and gray bar with black menu items below). This design was created to delineate the natural break between two distinct categories of menu items. Not all sites have this natural break and thus do not need the divided Left Navigation Bar. An acceptable modification of the template files will allow a solid Left Navigation Bar to work with a photo and Tool-Tip Bar.
As with the other navigation elements that frame the Content Area of the page, the width of the LNAV bar should not be altered. The color of the bar can be changed to complement the rest of the page. Color can also be used on the menu items to delineate different groups of items as shown in the LNAV bar on this page.
The all capitals style of menu items is the preferred presentation, but caps and lowercase can be used. The idea behind the all-caps structure is that these represent the major categories of your site under which all other links and menu items are organized. This site, for example, uses LNAV menus in all caps and the related menu items (listed below) in caps and lowercase.

To customize the Left Navigation Bar using graphics based navigation, select the lnav.psd Photoshop file in the template that best fits your content. There are psd files for one-, two-, and three-line LNAV items with garnet, dark gray, and light gray backgrounds.
