OneCarolina Selects DegreeWorks to Enhance Degree Audit, Advising Services

Improving the student experience is one of the core tenets of the OneCarolina project. That’s why, when the student registration portion of OneCarolina is implemented in fall 2013, it will include DegreeWorks.

DegreeWorks is just one of the ways OneCarolina will make things easier for faculty and students. As a web-based product, DegreeWorks will enable students and advisors to review past, present, and future academic coursework to evaluate which degree requirements have been completed and which degree requirements remain. It will integrate seamlessly with Banner Student, which is the web-based self-service system that will handle most student administrative needs, including course registration.

“Today’s USC undergraduate student has more scholarly opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, than ever before,” said University Registrar Aaron Marterer. “The upcoming launch of the new Carolina Core and USC Connect underscores this reality here on the Columbia campus. Looking ahead, launching DegreeWorks across the USC system will ensure that our students are thoroughly equipped to plan and track their wide-ranging educational experiences.”

For students, DegreeWorks will provide real-time delivery of degree completion information through an intuitive web self-service interface. For example, DegreeWorks will allow for “What If” planning, which will show students how progress towards degree completion changes if they add a minor or change majors and help them stay on track for timely degree completion.

“The suite of self-service educational planning tools offered through DegreeWorks will empower USC students to become better managers of their own learning and ultimately improve the efficiency of their time to graduation,” continued Marterer. “It will even accommodate the planning needs of many of our students who change majors and even campuses during their academic career here at USC.”

For faculty, DegreeWorks will allow them to search for students by school, degree, and major; view students degree progress; and communicate with students about their degree plans electronically. DegreeWorks will also help administrators better understand student demand for courses, and improve course planning and scheduling.

DegreeWorks installation will begin later this year in advance of its formal rollout in fall 2013.
