2024-2025 Winter Session Online Course Development Grant

Application Deadline: Monday, May 6, 2024 by 11:59 p.m.

Purpose

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), in collaboration with the Graduation and Retention Network (GARNET),  invites faculty to submit proposals for the development or revision of exemplary undergraduate online courses for Winter Session 2024-2025 (December 30, 2024 – January 19, 2025).  This goal will be accomplished by providing funding support, instructional design assistance, pedagogical resources, and technological support to faculty.

Eligible Faculty

  • Any faculty member at USC Columbia (tenure-track, professional track or adjunct) is eligible to apply.
  • Any faculty member who submits a proposal is expected to serve as the instructor of record the first time the course is offered to receive funding.
  • Faculty may receive funding for only one course per grant cycle.

Eligible Courses

  • Proposals must be for the development or revision of fully online asynchronous courses (in which 100% of the instruction is offered online, with no required synchronous class meetings).
  • The course must be approved for Distributed Learning.

Up to ten proposals will be awarded based on the quality of applications received.

  • $2,500 will be awarded for the full development of a course for Winter Session 2024-2025.
  • $1,500 will be awarded for the substantial revision of a course for Winter Session 2024-2025.
  • Pedagogical and design support for the development of instructional content will be provided by CTE Instructional Designers.

Funds be disbursed to awardees after the completion of the project. Completion of the project includes the course passing a quality review and being finalized in Blackboard by Thursday, August 1, 2024. Funds should be expended by all parties by the end of Fiscal Year 2025 (by June 30, 2025).

When completing the Online Application, you must enter information pertaining to your unit budget manager and PeopleSoft A-fund budget number. Please contact your unit budget manager and request the appropriate PeopleSoft A-fund budget number. If your grant proposal is accepted, then you must notify your unit budget manager of the financial award. Doing so will ensure a timely transfer of award funding.

To apply, complete the Online Application and submit the Department Support Form [pdf].

Please include confirmation from your department chair, program director, or dean supporting efforts to offer your funded course in Winter Session 2024-2025. Submit a signed Department Support Form [pdf]. (Digital signatures are accepted.) If the proposed learning content is for a unit outside of your academic department, then you must obtain endorsement from that unit’s program director.

Develop a one- to two-page proposal narrative that provides:

  • A brief narrative that describes why you would like to develop or revise the course for Winter Session 2024-2025.
  • A brief explanation of your interest and qualifications as instructor of record for the proposed course.
  • A one paragraph summary of the importance of the proposed course to University, college or department curriculum objectives.
  • Specific learning outcomes for the proposed course.

Applications that are complete and responsive to this announcement will be evaluated for merit. Proposals should be written to be understood by committee members who are not necessarily experts in the proponent’s discipline. Applicants should limit or avoid the use of jargon and acronyms whenever possible.

Proposals will be evaluated by the following criteria:

  • Completeness of application and conformity to guidelines.
  • Clear and pedagogically coherent rationale for the project.
  • Likelihood that the course will enhance the quality or extend the reach of Winter Session.
  • Feasibility of the course being offered in the Winter Session format.
  • Likely impact and sustainability of the proposed course.

Faculty receiving awards will be expected to:

  • Participate with fellow grant participants, GARNET staff, and CTE staff in a kickoff meeting in May 2024 to share ideas and resources and to discuss best practices.
  • Collaborate regularly with a CTE Instructional Designer to design, develop, and prepare the proposed course for Winter Session 2024-2025 (December 30, 2024 – January 19, 2025).
  • Share the following information to be posted on the GARNET website by August 1, 2024:
    • Instructor contact information
    • Summary of the course in 300 words or less
    • Course learning outcomes
  • Submit a complete version of the course syllabus to GARNET by August 1, 2024.
  • Pass a quality review to ensure the course meets the Quality Standards for Online Courses by August 1, 2024.
  • Finalize the course development in Blackboard Learn Ultra Course View (UCV) by August 1, 2024.

  • All applicants will be notified by Friday, May 10, 2024.
  • Grant kickoff meeting will be scheduled in May 2024.
  • Project ends on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
  • Course is offered from December 30, 2024 - January 19, 2025
