Changing Academic Advisors

Recommendations:

  • Consider why you want to change advisors.
    • Are you switching majors?
    • Are you and your advisor not a good fit?
    • Have you made a good connection with another professor/advisor who could serve as your advisor?
  • Contact department or college of your intended new advisor and explain why you want to make a switch.

  • If you have a specific advisor is mind, contact the advisor directly and let them know you are interested in have them serve as your academic advisor.

Keep in Mind:

  • Most advisors are assigned a certain number of advisees. If you are not able to have your top choice as an advisor, you can still form a relationship with her/him. Stop by their office from time to time to talk about your interest in the major, your goals, etc.

For other suggestions on working with your advisor, visit the “My Advising” page http://www.sc.edu/academicsuccess/advise.html
