Interested in changing your major?

Here are a few tips to help guide this process. Keep in mind that application deadlines, course requirements, and other information vary from college to college. This list is only to serve as a guide and not meant to be an exhaustive list.

  • Explore Career Center resources The Career Center can discuss possible majors with you and careers that relate to those majors. They offer online resources and consultations with career counselors.

  • Research the undergraduate majors and degrees offered at the University of South Carolina. This site provides a menu of all the majors and degrees offered at the University of South Carolina.

  • Learn about degree requirements through the Majors and Minors handbooks.

  • Call or stop by the department that you are hoping to enter.
    Some questions to ask:
    • When are the deadlines for applying to this college/major?
    • Is there a waiting list to enter this college/major?
    • When is the earliest possible date that you can meet with an advisor to discuss courses needed and other admission requirements?
    • What are the admission requirements (courses needed, minimum GPA)?

  • If the college/major you are hoping to enter does not have advising appointments available until the advisement period ends, talk to your current advisor about courses for the upcoming semester. Some questions to ask:
    • What are your suggestions for courses I should take that would count toward the college/major I am hoping to enter?
    • Do you know someone in that department I could contact to get more information about changing to this major?

  • Be aware that registration for some courses is restricted to students currently in the college/major. Ask your current advisor or someone in the desired college/major if there are other courses that will count toward your degree.

  • Download and complete the Change of College form. If you are changing to a major in a different college, complete the Change of College form. Get your current Dean’s signature and the Dean’s signature for the college that you are hoping to enter. See the list of Dean’s office locations in the table below:
