2012

Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)

2012 District III (Southeast) Advancement Awards Program

USC Connect Profiles Website
(Produced for the Office of the Provost)
GRAND AWARD WINNER in the category "Overall Web Site Design & Implementation"
Judge's Comments: The concept for this site is fantastic. It was well thought out. The design is striking, clean and simple. We love the use of the large photographs. The slow dissolve of the blurbs is very thoughtful, and makes you want to read further.

Times, University of South Carolina
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE in the category "Internal Tabloids & Newsletters"
Judge's Comments: Creative layout, engaging and fun photos; writing is very consistent. -- The content was original and the By The Numbers segments were creative and engaging. The content seemed interesting even for non-faculty or staff; great feature writing. -- The type was a bit small, but the publication was very high quality for the number of issues. USC is doing a lot with not too much money.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE in the category "Tabloid & Newsletter Publishing Improvement"
Judge's Comments: Love the new masthead -- institutional identity is much clearer. Interesting content that supports goal of creating sense of community, although satellite campuses may not find the content as relevant. Good call to use the print publication for playful, story-based content that encourages people to linger, while moving the more "transactional" content online. Good use of infographics and sidebars. Full-color interior is a great change, though some judges found the palette distractingly bold. Suggestions include adding attributions to pull quotes and making it clearer where to go for the complementary online content (we did not see the URL on most issues) and how to subscribe to the daily e-communique (one text box encouraged people to subscribe to Day Times but provided no details on how to do that). Overall a great improvement.

Paint the Town Garnet
(A Gamecock pride campaign tied to the University of South Carolina vs. East Carolina University football game held in Charlotte)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Institutional Relations Projects"
Judge's Comments: The goal was clear although the results are hard to measure. They came up with multiple ways to reach their goals and their methods were creative. They took advantage of a planned event to meet one of their institutional goals.
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Special Events"
Judge's Comments: Fun idea with a big budget! Involved the community.

Moore Magazine, Fall 2010
(Produced for the Darla Moore School of Business)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Institutional Publications"
Judge's Comments: Quite creative design and artwork.
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Illustrations"
Judge's Comments: The judging panel appreciated the effort and creativity in the cover design as well as the collaboration in bringing the format to life.

Moving Image Research Collections Pocket Folder and Inserts
(Produced for Development and Alumni Relations)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Fundraising"
Judge's Comments: This pieces SHOWS and TELLS the story of just what funds are needed. Very visual piece with unique design.

Breakthrough Research Magazine, Winter 2011
(Produced for the Vice President for Research)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Illustrations"
Judge's Comments: The judging panel appreciated the vibrant colors, attention to detail and representation of theme that occurred throughout this entry. When categorized by type of illustration, this entry rose to the top of its competitors.

Carolina's Promise Invitation (Capital Campaign Kick Off Celebration)
(Produced for Development and Alumni Relations)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Design for Print"
Judge's Comments: A nice and cleverly designed piece. Would have rather seen the actual piece; the picture does not do it justice.

Focus Carolina Booklet (University of South Carolina Strategic Plan)
(Produced for the Office of the Provost)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Design for Print"
Judge's Comments: The interior pages are seamlessly integrated with words and pictures to create the snapshot images of the main mission point. Refreshing text; excellent photos.

Who Are You?
(Video produced in support of the university's comprehensive graphic identity system project)
SPECIAL MERIT AWARD in the category "Slide & Multimedia Programs"
Judge's Comments: Great concept and results seem terrific
