In order to improve teaching, it is important to be able to first evaluate teaching performance. Peer review of teaching is a form of evaluation in which colleagues provide feedback to one another regarding teaching and learning within a particular course or courses. Peer evaluation could include a review of teaching and assessment methods, course materials, or other teaching-related course activities.

Peer review of teaching may include formative assessment intended for improvement of teaching and learning within a particular course or course. Peer review may also be one part of summative assessment within a formal review process for tenure and pay decisions. Both types of teaching assessment can be helpful in providing feedback to the instructor regarding his or her teaching.

Guidelines and Recommendations

The following links have been reviewed by CTE staff and are suggested as guidelines for how to develop and conduct peer teaching reviews. Recommendations include developing a review process that fits the needs of both instructors and reviewers in a particular department or unit. Review guidelines are suggested to include training of reviewers, as well as a pre-observation meeting to discuss specific mutual goals of the teaching observation and review course materials. Any observation of teaching should be followed with a face-to-face discussion that provides positive and constructive feedback to the instructor.

Example Peer Evaluation Instruments

The attached documents are merely examples of peer evaluation instruments utilized by some University of South Carolina departments or units. Units are encouraged to develop an evaluation that is specific to the particular needs of their own instructors, courses and unit policies.
