Recognition
Societies The University of South Carolina appreciates the generous support of
alumni and friends at all levels of giving. Your gifts allow the
University to fund worthy endeavors, including scholarships and
initiatives to enhance teaching, research, cultural activities, and
economic development. The various giving societies are based on
your annual as well as cumulative giving to the University.

The various giving societies are based on your annual giving to the
Carolina Fund or other academic areas of USC from July 1 - June 30.
Special recognition is given to members in appreciation of their
exceptional devotion. Your gift along with your
corporate match will be combined for inclusion in the highest annual
recognition society.

G.O.L.D Society
The G.O.L.D. Society recognizes Graduates of the Last
Decade who make a gift to the university. This recognition society
is unique because it is based on your participation rather than the size
of your gift. Each gift makes a direct impact on at least one
student, and collectively we can help advance the University of South
Carolina into one of the nation’s premiere institutions.

The Carolina Guardian Society honors donors of deferred gifts such as
trusts, bequests, insurance policies and annuities.
Formerly known as the USC Legacy Club, membership in the society has increased for a current total of
564 individuals, including 29 anonymous members. Members of the
Carolina Guardian Society represent over $166 million in future gifts to
the University and its affiliated foundations. To date, matured planned
gifts represents over $14 million.
The name of the society was drawn from a speech by Thomas Cooper, the University's
second president. In an 1823 commencement speech, Cooper said, "I pray you, become
the guardians of this ... alma mater so ... that to have been a graduate of the South
Carolina College, shall everywhere be considered as a fair passport to the world's
esteem."
The society was inaugurated in 1998 on the 175th anniversary of Cooper's speech with
Retired Army Major General T. Eston Marchant serving as its first chair. Chair Rita Bragg
Cullum, Esquire is the current chair.
