Nutrition and Disease in the African Diaspora
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
University of South Carolina Public Health Research Center, Room 114
921 Assembly Street
To arrange a meeting time with Dr. Hall, please contact Sarah Epting
at srgause@gwm.sc.edu or 803-251-6363.
Dr. Robert L. Hall began to focus on controversies surrounding the
diets of slaves in the antebellum South of the United States and on
diseases in which nutritional deficiencies are implicated after
writing an article for the Winter 2007 edition of Southern Quarterly,
titled "Africa and the American South: Culinary Connections."
His detailed historical research concentrates on times prior to 1910-
the eve of the upsurge of black migration from the rural and small
town South to the North, Midwest, and the West. Traditional
foodways in the rural South were not in and of themselves unhealthy
in these earlier time periods but have become more so with
migration/urbanization, staggering increases over time in sugar and
processed food consumption, decreases in the amount of physical
activity without commensurate decreases in caloric intake, etc.
Hall has also become particularly interested in diseases in which
Vitamin D deficiencies are implicated, including several kinds of
cancer (such as colorectal cancer). He believes that
some of this has to do with densely melanted skin screening out
ultraviolet radiation which particularly effects darker complexioned
African Americans who had migrated to less sunny climes during the
Great Migration. |
