- What is Find Text?
Find Text provides a link from a citation within a database to the electronic full-text of the article, if available. If the electronic full-text of the article is not available, Find Text will provide a link to the USC Library Catalog. Users can then check to see if the journal is available in a different format. Currently, Find Text works for journal citations only.
- Why are there several options to retrieve the full-text of the article?
The Libraries may have access to the electronic version of an article
from more than one provider. For example, we may have electronic
full-text access from the publisher and also from an article database,
such as Expanded Academic.
- Why is the full-text of the article not available electronically?
- USC-Columbia may not have a subscription to the electronic version of the journal.
- USC-Columbia may have a subscription to the electronic version of the journal, but not the volume in which the article appears.
- The publisher or distributor may not yet have all issues of the journal available electronically.
The message states "Sorry, no full text sources have been identified for this citation." How can I get this article?
The next step is to search the USC Library Catalog to see if the journal is owned by the Libraries in a different format. If the journal is not owned, USC-Columbia patrons can complete an Interlibrary Loan request.
Why don't I link directly to the article?
It is not always possible for Find Text to take you directly to the article, but Find Text will get you as close as possible to the article. Databases and publisher's websites all behave differently. Find Text may get you to the electronic journal provider's homepage with a list of journals, a list of volumes and issues available for a specific journal title, or a table of contents. It may then be necessary to navigate or perform a search to reach the full-text of the article.
Find Text is activated in the database that I am using, but I do not see the Find Text button for all citations.
In some databases, Find Text will not display for book or book chapter citations. This is because at this time Find Text works only for journal citations.
Why does Find Text display for all citations when Find Text will work only for journal citations?
Some database providers do not provide the option to have Find Text display for journal citations only. This is why you may see the Find Text button display for book citations, book chapter citations, and ERIC documents.
Is Find Text activated in all databases?
No. Not all databases are "Find Text" enabled.
I need help or have additional questions.
