Conservation Laboratory
The conservation laboratory is a 2,300
square-foot facility designed to provide for the
conservation and preservation of rare University library
materials.
The lab has facilities to treat flat paper,
pamphlets, cartographic items, parchment,
pictorial works, and bound materials. Book
treatments performed include construction of
clamshell boxes, text block repair, re-sewing,
and conservation of bindings. Flat paper
conservation treatments include leafcasting and
pulp fills, Japanese paper repair,
deacidification, washing, flattening, bleaching,
stain, tape, backing, and mold removal, lining,
humidification, suction table treatments, and
encapsulation.

Other important services provided by the laboratory
staff members include answering daily inquiries from the
general public and other institutions about conservation
and preservation, and training student interns,
volunteers, faculty, and staff to assist with
conservation work.
The conservation laboratory is not open directly to
