William Foran Memorial Fund

Long-time University of South Carolina history professor William A. Foran has been honored by the establishment of a fund to purchase materials relating to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods for the South Caroliniana Library.

Students and peers were often awed by Professor Foran's scholarly command of his favorite period. His legendary Socratic style of teaching was recognized by the University in 1963 when he was presented the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award. Foran was a native New Yorker who received his undergraduate degree at Carolina and did graduate work at Johns Hopkins and USC.

An anonymous out-of-state researcher became acquainted with Professor Foran while conducting doctoral research at the South Caroliniana Library and made the initial gift to establish the Foran Memorial Fund, thus perpetuating the memory of Professor Foran and his work while furthering the Library's ability to acquire significant Civil War materials.

Additional contributions are encouraged to perpetuate the memory of William Foran. For information, please contact us.
