Geologic Highway Maps (paper) Geologic highway maps are multicolored regional maps which provide data for rock and soil sample collection and other points of geologic information.  These maps were produced in the 1960’s and 1970’s by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.  South Carolina is included in this collection’s nationwide coverage.  The Geologic Highway Maps are available for viewing in the Map Library.

 

Historic Soil Survey Maps (paper, digital) This is a collection of US Department of Agriculture Soil Survey maps from 1900 to the 1930’s.  These maps are available for viewing in the Map Library and are also available digitally .

 

Petroleum Economist Maps (paper, digital) These maps consist of a collection from the Petroleum Economist magazine and include energy, pipeline and oil storage maps from 1991 through the present.  These maps are available for viewing in the Map Library.  Ask the Map Library staff for assistance in accessing the PE archive online.

 

United States Geological Survey Geologic Maps (paper) The Map Library collection includes geologically-themed maps from the US Geological Survey covering South Carolina as well as North Carolina and Georgia.  These maps produced from the 1970& 8217;s forward include themes of mineral production, general geology, earthquake frequency, stability, stratigraphic framework and aeromagnetism.  These maps are available in the Map Library.

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources The Department distributes ESRI Shapefiles of geologic regions, digital elevation and fall line data.

United States Geological Survey The USGS provides a wealth of data about the geology of the United States to include South Carolina.

Delorme 3-D TopoQuads (digital) This CD-ROM collection of 3-D topographic maps is an interactive research system available in the Map Library.  This version is current as of 2002.

 

Fort Jackson through the Years (digital)  Part of a project with Fort Jackson, this digital collection of georeferenced aerial photographs from the 1950’s through the 1980’s provides a quick means of viewing historic change in specific locations on Fort Jackson.  This project is available upon request in ESRI format; the Map Library provides a machine capable of processing this information.

 

Map Templates (digital) The Map Library provides some basic outline maps on which users can base projects.

 

South Carolina Geographic Alliance CD-ROMs (digital) The South Carolina Geographic Alliance has published several interactive CD-ROMs which teach geographic concepts and South Carolina’s geography in particular.  The collections at the Map Library include the following:

GIS Links:

Center for GIS and Remote Sensing  This center exists to assist GIS and Remote Sensing users in the USC community and beyond.

Google Earth  Google Earth is a GIS package that displays aerial and satellite photos as well as many other layers in a user friendly format.

South Carolina Arc Users Network  These SC GIS users share information and data for a variety of applications.

South Carolina county GIS programs

South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control This Department produces data layers on a variety of human and physical topics.

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources The Department distributes information of recreational and geological significance.

South Carolina GIS Coordinator – Tim Detroy is the South Carolina GIS Coordinator for State Agencies.

South Carolina Office of Research and Statistics This office provides digital maps of SC political districts in Adobe and ESRI formats.

University of South Carolina Geography Department  The USC Geography Department produces a wealth of GIS data each semester for education and research.  The department’s website lists the information necessary to contact faculty about their research.

University of South Carolina GIS Server  The University of South Carolina Campus GIS Center hosts information related to the university campus as well as products from the faculty and students of the USC Geography Department.

 

Historic Aerial Photos    á  back to top á

 

Aerial Indexes and Photos (paper, some digital) The USC Map Library is home to over 130,000 aerial photos of South Carolina from the 1930’s to the 1980.  The photos vary in size from standard 9” by 9” prints to quadruple enlargements.  The collection also includes indexes of all South Carolina counties for quick location of specific photos and small-scale views.  The photos provide valuable information for engineers, ecologists and a variety of other academics and professionals.  The entire collection resides at the USC Map Library and is available for public viewing.  For more convenient service, please contact the Map Library staff to make an appointment.  A few of the aerial photos of the city of Columbia are available digitally through the University Libraries Digital Collections site.  The rest of the indexes and aerial photos are scheduled for digital conversion.

AniMap Plus 2.6  (digital) The Map Library provides patrons with access to the AniMap Plus 2.6 program and data.  This program allows the user to navigate through the changes in political geography in the lower 48 United States from 1776 to the present.  Due to the complex and powerful nature of this program, the Map Library also has on hand Plucking, Plotting, and Places…a video tutorial of AniMap.  This series of instructional videos and handouts from the program’s creator will help users of any experience level master it quickly.

 

Civil War Map Collection (digital) This 12-disc collection of high-resolution scans contains 795 maps and pages relating to the American Civil War.  This collection’s scope is truly massive; there are 56 rare maps of South Carolina and 250 of Virginia!    All images are stored in MrSID format.

 

Historic Road Maps (paper) The Map Library is home to a substantial collection of historically significant road maps of South Carolina.  These maps date back to the 1910’s and the collection’s density allows readers to see South Carolina road changes as they develop.  These maps are available for public viewing in the Map Library.

 

Historic Soil Survey Maps (paper, digital) This is a collection of US Department of Agriculture Soil Survey maps from 1900 to the 1930’s.  These maps are available for viewing in the Map Library and are also available digitally through the University Libraries Digital Collection.

 

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps (digital) This collection of maps (dating as far back as 1884) from the Sanborn Map Company depicts dozens of South Carolina cities for the purpose of fire insurance assessments.  These maps reside at the South Caroliniana Library and are also available digitally through the University Libraries Digital Collection.

 

United States Geological Survey Topographic Maps: 1888-1975 (paper, digital) USGS Topographic Maps (also known as & 8220;topos” and “quads& 8221;) are the national standard for depiction of physical land features.  The Map Library contains a complete collection these topographic maps covering South Carolina many of which date back to the late 19th Century.  Some, particularly the older maps, were produced by military agencies such as the Army Mapping Service and Defense Mapping Agency.  Historical topographic maps are available for viewing in the Map Library (searchable list) during regular hours and are also available digitally.

South Caroliniana Library Dedicated to preserving the history of the state and its citizens, the South Caroliniana Library contains the largest South Carolina historic paper map collection.

Ancestry.com Historic US Maps 1513-1990 This commercial genealogy research site has historic maps dating back to the 16th century.  South Carolina maps are among those in the collection.

Historic Map Works - South Carolina Historic Map Works features a handful of high resolution map images from 1780 through 1900, most of which focus on Charleston.

History of Cartography / WWW-Virtual Library  This site links to thousands of map images.

Perry-Castaneda Map Collection – Historical US This collection of Historical US maps from the University of Texas includes many early maps of South Carolina.

SCIWay Historic SC Maps List  This is a compilation of various online resources for Historic SC Maps

University of Alabama Historic SC Maps The University of Alabama makes its collection of historic SC maps available for online viewing.

Aeronautical (paper) The Map Library’s collection of Defense Mapping Agency aeronautical charts includes Tactical Pilotage Charts (TPC, 1:500000 scale), Operational Navigation Charts (ONC, 1:1000000 scale) and Jet Navigation Charts (JNC, 1:2000000 scale) dating from the 1970’s to the present.  These maps include coverage of South Carolina; they are available for viewing in the Map Library.

 

Aeronautical Chart Links:

National Aeronautical Charting Office  The Federial Avaiation Administration’s NACO provides free downloads of a number of charts and procedures.  The office also sells other aeronautical charts.

SkyVector  This site provides an interactive view of aeronautical charts.

 

Nautical Charts (paper) The Map Library has NOAA nautical charts of the United States (1:40000 and 1:80000 scale) as well as Bathymetric Fishing maps.  These maps include coverage of the South Carolina coast dating from the early 20th century.  These maps are available in the Map Library and also scheduled for conversion to digital form.  The USC map library has a number of early atlases that feature sea charts of early explorers.

Road Maps (paper) The Map Library road maps collection for South Carolina includes state, city and county level maps from the 1940’s to the present produced by a variety of publishers including the American Automobile Association, Rand-McNally, MapArt and an assortment of gasoline companies.  These maps are available for viewing in the Map Library.
