EXHIBIT -- GOVERNOR ROBERT E. McNAIR Collection
The Robert E. McNair
Collection is large and rich and documents McNair's service in World War
II, his political campaigns, and his distinguished career in public
service as a member of the General Assembly, 1951 to 1962, Lieutenant
Governor, 1963 to 1965, and Governor, 1965 to 1971. The collection
consists of over one hundred and thirty feet of papers, 1953 to 1998.
After leaving public office, McNair founded what became the largest law
firm in South Carolina and one of the largest in the Southeast.
McNair's accomplishments as governor included important advances in
education; notable improvement in coordination and cooperation among
state agencies, commissions, and bureaus; the involvement of the public
in planning and decision-making; a new emphasis on tourism, including
the creation of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism; and
continued aggressive industrial recruitment.
