| Where is the Music Library? |
The Music Library’s circulation department (803) 777-5139 is located on the second and third floors of the School of Music. Here, you may check out books, scores, and audio-visual materials, place holds on books, and return Interlibrary Loan materials. For maps and more information, please visit our "contact us" page. |
Who can check out music materials? |
USC students, faculty and staff may check out an unlimited number of books or scores with their University ID cards. Audio-visual materials circulate only to music faculty and music graduate students. Faculty members of other South Carolina colleges or universities may check out 5 books or scores with a valid and current ID from their institutions. Members of the Carolina Alumni Association and the Thomas Cooper Society may check out 5 books or scores with a valid card from these organizations. All eligible Alumni Association, Thomas Cooper Society and non-USC faculty members must have their ID cards made or barcoded at Thomas Cooper Library before they can be used at the Music Library. For additional information about these types of cards, please contact the Thomas Cooper Library at (803) 777-3145. |
| Item loan policies |
Most music books and scores check out for 4 weeks to undergraduate students. Audio-visual materials do not circulate outside of the library to undergraduate students. USC faculty and graduate students may check out music books for the semester. Audio-visual materials circulate to graduate students and faculty for 4 weeks. Composer collected works (M1-M3) circulate only to USC music faculty for a period of 3 days. Items marks as “non-circulating” do not leave the library. Special collection materials are available by appointment only (777-5139).
Items may be renewed according to their renewal limits (see “Renewals” below). All materials are subject to recall. Renewals must be made at the Music Library circulation desk or online. Students may not renew music library materials over the phone. |
| Reserves |
Music reserves may consist of audio/visual materials, scores, books, and personal copies.Course reserve materials are housed behind the circulation desk in the Music Library. A notebook is kept at the desk, which contains the reserve lists for all music classes using reserve services. Classes are listed alphabetically by professor. If an item is not in the reserve folder, it is not on reserve.
A valid USC ID is required to check out reserve materials. Students may check out two (2) items at any given time. Most reserve materials circulate for two hours in the library. Reserve items may not leave the library, although faculty and teaching assistants may check out reserve items for class use for a period of two hours. A reserve item may only be renewed if no one else is waiting for it.
All reserve items must be returned to the Music Library circulation desk. Because course reserve materials are in demand, fines for late returns are strictly enforced. The course reserve fine rate is $0.10 a minute for each item. Course reserve fines accrue continually, 24 hours a day, regardless of library hours. |
Chamber music
(score and parts) |
Chamber music (score and parts) is circulated like most regular books and scores. Individual parts, however, may not be checked out or returned individually. Performing groups needing chamber music for longer than the standard 4-week period should consult the Music Librarian for special permission. It is not permissible to write in, apply tape to, or cause any damage to individual parts. Chamber music that is returned damaged or incomplete will result in a replacement fee that will be assessed to the individual who checked it out. |
| Printing / Music Technology Center |
Free printing is available from the macintosh computers in the School of Music’s Technology Center (MTC). The Music Library is not responsible for stocking paper in the MTC. |

| Individuals with disabilities |
The Music Library is happy to make accommodations for those individuals needing special assistance. JAWS software is available on two computers in the Music Library for the visually impaired. Contact the Head Music Librarian, Jennifer Ottervik, for assistance at (803) 777-5139. |
| Returning music materials |
Music materials must be returned directly to the Music Library. There is no after-hours box for returning music materials, so they must be returned during the library’s hours of operation. |
| Recalling music materials |
If a library book is checked out, you may place a recall on the book. The book will be due 2 weeks from the date recalled, unless the original due date is earlier. When the book is returned, the Music Library will hold the book and notify you. Recalls may also be placed via an email request. To do so, please email us and include your full name, email address, phone number, and the title, author, and call number of the item you need recalled. You should receive a confirmation email within two working days. If you do not, please contact Joe Henderson at (803) 777-5139 for assistance. |
| Missing items |
If you can't find a book and it isn't checked out, you may request that the item be searched for. The library will search for the book over a period of 6 months. If the item is found, you will receive an email and the book will be held at the Music Library circulation desk for you for up to 10 days. If the item has not been found a month after your search request, you may request the item through Interlibrary Loan. |
| E-mail notification |
Notices concerning your library account will be sent to your default university email address. For students, this is the Gamecock email address. These notices include recall notices, fine notices and courtesy notices when an item is due soon. If you don't use your Gamecock email, click here for instructions on forwarding to another email address. (You will need to scroll about halfway down the page to find the forwarding instructions.) |
| Fines |
Most overdue fines are $.25 per item per day with a maximum fine of $20.00. Fines on recalled items are $1.00 per item per day. Fines on reserve items are $.10 cents per minute. Chamber music that is returned damaged or incomplete will result in a replacement fee that will be assessed to the individual who checked it out. All fines accrue continually, 24 hours a day, regardless of library hours. Items that are 40 days overdue will also accrue a one-time $10.00 processing fee. At this point a replacement fee will also be assessed; this is at least $45.00 for most books and can be higher, depending on the actual cost of replacement. The replacement fee will automatically be forgiven upon return of the item, provided it is returned in good condition. All fines and fees must be paid at Thomas Cooper Library. Please email the Music Library at ottervik@mailbox.sc.edu for more information. |
| Appeals |
If you receive a bill or an overdue notice that you believe is in error, you may file an appeal. If you think you've returned a book, but it is still on your library account, the book in question is placed on a "Missing/Claimed Returned" list. Library staff will search for the book for 6 months. If the book is found during this time, it will be removed from your patron record and no fines will incur. If, however, the book is not found in those 6 months, you will be charged a replacement fee for the book. Please come to the Music Library and fill out an appeal form, or submit your appeal online. If you have questions about appeals, please contact Jennifer Ottervik at (803) 777-5139 or by email at ottervik@mailbox.sc.edu |
