Biography
Dr. Fred William Teuber, Distinguished Professor Emeritus,
is a native of Flint, Michigan. He began piano lessons at
five, trumpet at eleven, and in high school took up the French
horn, which became his principal instrument. Dr. Teuber graduated
from Michigan State with a Bachelor’s in Music, from the New
England Conservatory with a Master’s in Music, and from the
University of Iowa with a Ph.D. His academic credentials are
in theory and counterpoint, but performing on horn led to
his career in music. He spent a summer at Tanglewood, and
two years with the Hdq 4th Army Band, San Antonio, then performed
studio work in the Los Angeles area. He then played in the
Colonial Theater in Boston, with The Harford and El Paso Symphonies,
and with the Columbia Philharmonic.
Dr. Teuber came to the University of South Carolina Department
of Music in 1967 and was one of only ten full-time faculty
members. His immediate duties were to teach all brass instruments,
with the intention of moving into theory and composition while
continuing to teach horn. One year later, with Peter Gerschefski,
Dr. Teuber designed the initial curriculum for the theory
and composition major at USC and accepted the first composition
student.
Dr. Teuber retired in 2000. In addition to academic work,
Dr. Teuber coached brass chamber groups and directed the music
for USC Theater Department musicals. He performed with the
Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Charlotte,
Greenville, Augusta, and Charleston Orchestras. His publications,
primarily chamber works, include eight titles. Among these
titles are Studies for the Horn (Shawnee Press) and The Hornists
Nests (Schirmer and Medici Music). |
