SPECIAL COLLECTIONS POLICY
Music Library, University Libraries
a) Only research notes, pencils, paper, and computers may be taken to the reading area. Ink, white-out, post-its, food, and other liquid or sticky materials are specifically forbidden. Briefcases, large bags, backpacks, coats, and other personal items should be left with a Music Library staff member, though no responsibility can be taken for the safety of items of value. All personal property may be subject to inspection upon leaving the reading area.
b) Use of the collections is restricted to those conducting serious scholarly research and requires a USC ID or other picture ID (faculty or student ID from another institution of higher learning, letter of reference from an established scholar, etc.). The ID (or some form of established personal identification) will be kept by the Music Library while materials are in use.
c) Requested items are retrieved by a staff member and brought to the reading area: materials must stay in the reading area unless special permission is obtained to use them elsewhere in the library (for example, to listen to recorded materials). Users will be asked to sign and date usage slips for all materials brought to the reading area. Except in special cases, researchers may only use three items at one time.
d) No items may be placed on the materials during their use, nor may materials be marked or altered in any way. Books must not be placed face down with the pages open. Do not write on paper that is resting on library materials. Researchers may be asked to wear cotton gloves when handling certain material. If it is necessary to place materials on a reading stand for protection, the materials must remain on the stand at all times.
e) Items requested for photocopying or other photo reproduction must be screened by the Head of the Music Library, both for physical condition and for possible copyright restrictions. Photocopies can only be made by a Music Library staff member. Photographic reproductions are for personal research only and are not to be placed in another repository without prior written permission from the Music Library. Permission to consult Special Collections materials does not convey the right to further reproduce or publish them. Citing, quoting, or referring to materials under the provisions of the United States Copyright laws is permitted; however, extensive quotation, reproduction, and/or publishing requires the permission from the Music Library and the owners of the copyright.
f) When work is completed, Music Library employees will return the materials to their proper location, after the materials have been checked and the usage slips marked to indicate return.
