The World Music Collection includes books on and sound recordings of traditional and popular musics from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South and Central America, Oceania, and the Caribbean. Recordings and monographs concerning folk, art, and popular musics of Europe and North America may be located using The Online Catalog.

In addition to relevant articles in the New Grove Dictionary of Music, 2nd ed. (REF ML100 .N48 2001), the Garland Encyclopedia of Music (REF ML100 .G16 1998) is another outstanding source of information. Each volume in this series is accompanied by a sampler CD. The library also has a current subscription to Ethnomusicology, which is available in both print and full-text electronic (http://www.jstor.org/journals/00141836.html) formats.

The materials are grouped by geographical region, and maps are color-coded according to the number of available resources for a particular country. If an item should be categorized under multiple countries, then it is listed under each. Twenty-second audio excerpts are included for all recordings, and each country links to its corresponding article in Grove Music Online (this feature is only available to USC faculty and students). Local call numbers are provided for each item.

This website, based on a similar resource developed by Dr. Gary Boye at Appalachian State University’s Music Library, was initially created in 2004. This is an ongoing project. New resources will be identified and added to the appropriate page as they are acquired.
