Research and Development
| |
The Arther E. Holman, Jr. Conservation Laboratory is consistently involved in collaborative
research with various departments of the university. Some of these projects are listed below:
- Ballpoint Pen Ink Research
In conjunction with the USC Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, we are beginning research on the effectiveness of
select fixatives on ballpoint pen ink. Seed money for the project has been allotted by USC's research
and development department.
- Mold Research
Mold can be a massive problem in a subtropical climate like South Carolina. While there are no
state regulations on the allowable concentrations of mold in a public building, mold can be an
allergen, leading to severe respiratory problems in some individuals.
This project, which is
untertaken in collaboration with the Public Health Department, South Carolininana Library, the
Medical School Library, and McKissick Museum, will utilize surveys sent out to anonymous institutions across
the state to help analyze and control mold growth in schools, libraries, museums, archives, and records centers.
An online version of the survey is available. If you are connected to one of the above institutions,
please feel free to take the survey here.
- Artifact Tracker
In addition to research, the conservation lab is involved with the development of a database
that will be used to track, monitor, and create reports regarding items, hours, projects, and preservation plans throughout
the university libraries. The database is being created by Leon Zak and is nearing its beta testing phase.
