Biographical Note: Few individuals achieve the success that Donald S. Russell (1906-1998) enjoyed in life, fewer still achieve success in such a wide range of arenas, and even fewer have active careers of the duration of Russell's. Donald Russell held important positions in the Roosevelt administration during World War II. Following the war, he returned to the private practice of law and gained wealth and influence in South Carolina. In 1952, Russell was named president of the University of South Carolina. He took no salary while president and used his personal funds to establish important endowments and refurbish the president's home. He resigned as president in 1957 to run for governor.
