  • Evolution of a Campus: Expansion and Demolition at the University of South Carolina
         More than 200 years of drawings, photographs, and maps illustrate the changing built
                   environment of the USC campus. Together with rejected design proposals, this exhibit
                   documents both the campus as it was and the campus that never came to be.

  • In Memoriam: Maj. Gen. T. Eston Marchant (1920-2006)
          Exhibit honoring this former member of the USC Board of Trustees. Elected in 1965,
                   Marchant served as board chairman from 1970 – 1978; he resigned from the board
                   in 1978 to run for the office of adjutant general of the S.C. National Guard, an elected
                   office that he held for four terms until his retirement in 1994.

  • Greek Gamecocks: The Rise, Fall, and Rise of Fraternities at the University of South Carolina
         Exhibit documenting the establishment of the fraternity system at South Carolina College
                   during the late 1800s; underground activities in the decades following an 1897 edict
                   that forbid fraternities at state-supported colleges and universities, and the return of
                   Greek-letter societies after the ban was lifted in 1927.

                   Civil Rights activist Modjeska Simkins, South Carolina Representative Harriet
                   Keyserling, Congresswoman Liz Patterson, Civil War nurse Ada Bacot,
                   photographer Beulah Glover, and educator Abby D. Munro.

  • I-Day: September 11, 1963
         Exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the integration of USC, documenting
                   earlier efforts at integration, the University’s preparations for peaceful desegregation,
                   reactions from the University community, and photographs from the day three
                   African-American students registered at USC for the first time since Reconstruction.
                   Materials drawn from records of the Office of the President (University Archives),

  • Kohn-Hennig Family Collection Comes to South Caroliniana Library
         This remarkable donation of a significant private library consists of approximately
                   4,000 books and pamphlets covering a broad range of subjects and types of
                   materials, including the following: the Revolutionary War; Confederate imprints,
                   regimental histories, and recollections; antebellum politics and government,
                   agriculture, and labor; natural history; literature; the textile industry;
                   journalism; biography; serials; and local history.

2000 July - August

  • Portraying a Patriot: Francis Marion in Life and Legend
         The June 2000 release of the movie, "The Patriot," staring Mel Gibson, heightened interest
                   in the fact and folklore associated with the life of the Swamp Fox, Francis
                   Marion (1732-1795). Illustrations dating to the 18th – 20th centuries, photographs,
                   poems and text panels document Marion’s portrayal as an historic figure and
                   as a patriotic symbol in popular imagination.
