Address Spoken by Miss A. L. Pearson to the Queen of May -- Miss Sarah Angelica Singleton

Lines 1-24

Philadelphia. May 1st. '31.

      Address
Spoken by Miss A. L. Pearson to the Queen of May —
Miss Sarah Angelica Singleton — (So. Ca.)

We come to offer mighty Queen!
The fairest Princess Earth has seen; —
We come with rhyme and reason.
To offer at your Highness' feet,
The roses bright, the lilies sweet,
          The loveliest of the season.

Not for the beauty of your face,
Your peerless form, or matchless grace,
Though these surpass all others; —
Not for the splendour of your mien,
Have we created you our Queen,
          Thou best of Royal Mothers!

Not for the lustre of that Eye,
Though purest diamonds dare not vie
With such a blaze of Beauty: —
But the rich splendour of your Mind,
Where Wit and Genius sit enshrin'd,
Have made the task — our Duty.

We then — your subjects — bow with awe,
And own your sov'reign will our law; —
          We wait your high behest;
Proud to obey your least commant,
To run, walk, dance, sit still, or stand,
          As suits your Highness best.
