The Historical Children's Literature Collection

The White Rabbit

The White Rabbit, from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, illustrated by John Tenniel

Many popular children's authors of the nineteenth century are represented in the Historical Children's Collection. Among the approximately two thousand five hundred titles are works in their original bindings by Oliver Optic, R.M. Ballantyne, L. Frank Baum, Sophie May, G. A. Henty, Jacob Abbott and Frances Hodgson Burnett. The collection also contains early picture books, some with hand-colored plates, primers, alphabet books, school books, chapbooks and children's magazines. This group of books displays the diversity of books published for children in nineteenth-century Britain and America, from the didactic to the entertaining.
