Acquisitions Department: Duties

What Does the Acquisitions Department Do?

Simply put, Acquisitions is responsible for acquiring materials which have been selected for addition to the library collection. We purchase library materials in all format types, books, periodicals, serials, music scores, sound recordings, videos, films, manuscripts, microforms, computer files and electronic resources.

Materials are purchased from a variety of sources:

Directly from the publisher or producer;
Through vendors and distributors;
- Blackwell's Book Services
- Blackwell's Collection Manager
- BWI (Book Wholesalers, Inc.) Children's Books
- Eastern Book Company
- EBSCO Information Services
- EBSCONET
- Emery-Pratt
- Ingram ipage
- Rittenhouse (Health Sciences)
From sources in the rare book, periodical back-file and out-of-print markets.
From sources that provide a microform or paper reproduction of the original work.
While the majority of materials are purchased in the United States, Acquisitions actively buys materials from many foreign countries and has purchased titles from almost every country in the world.
